Hidden inside a Halo Waypoint update is the sad but unsurprising news that 343 Industries will be shutting down the PC multiplayer servers for "Halo 2" next month.

“We’ve been monitoring the population for months, and it’s been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less,” the post reads. “Those that own this game can continue to enjoy Multiplayer over LAN after that date,” but the service end-date for online play is February 15.

There are a multiplayer achievements available for the game, which launched in 2007 on the PC, almost three years after it’s Xbox debut. "Halo 2" players will have until the 15th to snag those before they become unobtainable.

Microsoft shut Xbox Live off for the original Xbox in the spring of 2010, taking "Halo" and "Halo 2" console multiplayer down with it, making the PC version the last bastion for the game’s online play.

The news comes as 343i is gearing up a new year of Spartan Ops missions, the episodic co-op campaigns for "Halo 4." Season Two -- which includes episodes six through ten -- of Fireteam Majestic’s battle for Requiem begins Monday.

You can find a recap of Season One in the trailer below.
